TA’WIL MUSYKIL AL-QUR’AN KARYA IBN QUTAYBAH
Abstract
As the terminologies within Qur’anic interpretation discourse, tafsir and ta’wil are still the matters of debatable. Some consider them synonimous and the others see them as different things. The polemic is heated by the lack of consensus on the beginning of emergence of ta’wil as a technical term. This article discusses one of works on ta’wil in classical period (2-3 H centuries) i.e. Ta’wil Musykil al-Qur’an of Ibn Qutaybah. The framework of al-Tafsir wa al-Mufassirun of adz-Dzahabi will be employed to describe several key points: background, method, pattern, characteristic, and example of interpretation.
