Abstract

This article discusses the thoughts of KH MA Sahal Mahfudh. This study aims to: first, find out the thoughts of KH MA Sahal Mahfudh about Islamic boarding schools and their role. Second, knowing the concept of Religious Social Education.method library research or library research, using the type of intellectual biography research. The approach used is the Phenomenological Approach, Factual History, and Reflective Logic. To analyze the data in this study, the author uses the Critical Analytical Method. Results of the research show that pesantren is not only a Tafaqquh Fiddin in a narrow sense. Pesantren as part of society has a dual role, namely as a religious and social institution. For this reason, first, that in order to achieve the goals of pesantren as a religious institution and as a social institution, pesantren emphasizes intellectual activities covering the fields of aqidah, shari'ah, morals and ijtimaiyah in an integrated and directed manner by choosing the right and effective types according to the conditions. boarding school. Second, pesantren as a social institution that is able to function to mobilize self-reliance and self-help and is able to play an active role in community service, carry out integrated activities that are in accordance with the conditions of the community and the pesantren itself in developing community welfare to achieve sa'adatud darain. Third, to increase the existence of pesantren in the midst of society and to improve the two functions above, pesantren need to maintain systems and methods that are already running, and add new systems, methods, evaluation methods and facilities that are better and more effective. From the results of this study, it is expected to contribute to the thinking of Islamic education, especially Islamic boarding schools and their responsibilities to society, nation and state. Furthermore, it is also expected to serve as a reference and description of the model of community development by pesantren which is manifested in the concept of socio-religious education, both for pesantren and other institutions outside the pesantren.
