Abstract

Early childhood development includes eight aspects, one of which is cognitive development. Mathematics is one of the abilities to develop children's cognitive aspects. Besides that mathematics is very important in everyday life. Even every minute we do not escape the use of mathematics. However, it should be noted that teaching mathematics to early childhood is certainly different from adults, both in terms of methods and content. PAUD Nurul Huda Jabon Sidoarjo is a school that applies the snake and ladder game as a learning tools. This study aims to find media that are effective in introducing the basic concepts of mathematics to early childhood by applying learning media for the traditional game of snakes and ladders to children aged 4-5 years. This research was conducted at PAUD Nurul Huda Jabon Sidoarjo in the odd semester of the 2020 academic year. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive research type. Data obtained through interviews, observation and documentation. The research subjects were teachers and children aged 4-5 years. The results showed that the traditional game of snakes and ladders can improve the early math skills of children aged 4-5 years by taking the steps of the teacher to invite the children to gather in the field using the snake ladder tools, the children are asked to play according to the number of dice they roll. The child is asked to move forward or backward according to the number of dice, write down the numbers 1-10 and say the geometric shape. This study describes the implementation of the traditional game of snakes and ladders in improving the early math skills of children aged 4-5 years in PAUD Nurul Huda Jabon Sidoarjo.
