Conceptually, Islam Nusantara is the result of interpretation of Islamic teachings that are associated with the reality of the people of the Archipelago in the context of developing moderate, tolerant, and graceful Islamic da'wah. In addition, sociologically, Islam Nusantara is the result of the interaction process of Islamic teachings brought by the Walisanga and the Nusantara ulema in a peaceful and tolerant manner, and scientifically, Islam continues to be continued from the scholars of Ahlussunnah wal Jama'ah to the Prophet Muhammad SAW. . Methodologically, the moderation of Islam Nusantara uses a methodological framework that can be used to observe the labeling activities of Islamic Nusantara laws based on maqashid al-Shari'ah which leads to the concept of al-Maslahah, and has moderate characteristics both at the methodological level and at the application level. The fact that the moderation of Islam Nusantara was formed by the struggle of the history of Indonesian Islam is quite long. Muhammadiyah and NU are two Islamic organizations that have crossed paths in fighting for forms of Islamic moderation, both through the educational institutions they manage and the socio-political-religious activities they play.
