Abstract

ABSTRACT

The Crusades, so named because of the symbol of the cross worn around their necks, were not wars for religion, but for territorial control. They had a profound impact on many aspects of life, including politics, economics, and social life, some of which are still felt today. The Crusades, which lasted from 1096 to 1291, are divided into three main periods. In the first period, Crusader forces captured Jerusalem and established the Latin Empire, using violence against the Muslim population. The second period was marked by Muslim efforts, led by Nur al-Din ibn Zanqi, to reclaim territory held by the Crusaders. In the third period, Crusaders, including Frederick III and Richard "the Lionheart," focused on Egypt and Palestine, but their campaign ended in defeat in 1291.
