Abstract

Arabic is one of the foreign languages that is also studied in educational institutions in Indonesia. Learning Arabic is inseparable from the process of Islamization in Indonesia. The majority of Indonesian people who adhere to Islam make Arabic one of the subjects that are considered important, especially in studying religious sources. Therefore, this study seeks to reveal the history of Arabic learning and the development of Arabic in Indonesia. In the process of finding the source, the author uses the technique of Literature Studies and Historical Methods. The results of this study are Arabic learning activities have been carried out since the 18th century which was marked by the establishment of Islamic Educational Institutions, such as Islamic Boarding Schools, Meunasah and Surau. This activity is also closely related to the process of Islamization in the Archipelago (Indonesia). During the turn of the year there were developments in learning methods and curriculum changes in Indonesia. Although there have been changes and changes to the curriculum, there are still many students in non-dormitory Madrasah Tsanawiyah who are less proficient in Arabic than students from Islamic boarding schools. This is because the educational background of students before entering Madrasah Tsanawiah (SD/MI). It is necessary to combine the teaching methods applied in Islamic boarding schools (traditional systems) with teaching in non-dormitory Madrasah Tsanawiyah to be more effective. In addition, it is necessary to create study groups among students related to Arabic subjects.
