Abstract
Who does not know about Islamic boarding school? In 2011 it is about 25.000 boarding schools which spread in Indonesia. However, ironically, only a few people know about the background of boarding school and its development. Therefore, this research is based on the library research which found that that boarding school was originally from India and Islamic tradition. Boarding school was estimated starting its existence when Islamic religion came to Indonesia. The first boarding school known to be founded by a wali songo (religious leader in Islam), he was syekh maulana malik Ibrahim. Recently, boarding school can be classified into two, namely traditional and modern boarding school. Keywords: Pesantren, Sejarah, Pendidikan, Pertumbuhan dan PerkembanganReferences
