Abstract

Al-Ghazali's Islamic educational thought contributed significantly to shaping an educational paradigm oriented toward the moral development of students. In his view, education aims not only to foster intellectual intelligence but also to foster strong spiritual awareness and morality. In the modern era, Al-Ghazali's thoughts are highly relevant, especially with the rise of the issue of the criminalization of madrasas (Islamic schools) on social media. This issue reflects a moral crisis, disorientation of values, and public misperceptions about Islamic educational institutions. Madrasas, which should be centers of moral development, are often misunderstood due to disproportionate coverage in the digital space. Al-Ghazali's Sufi educational concept, which emphasizes the balance between reason and heart, knowledge and practice, and the teacher as a murabbi (leader), can be a solution in building a positive image of Islamic education that is character-based, moderate, and adaptive to current developments. This phenomenon indicates a degradation of ethical and spiritual values, which should be the main foundation of Islamic education. In this context, Al-Ghazali's thoughts are relevant for re-actualization, especially in building an educational system oriented toward character development. By integrating moral values, Islamic education can return to its original purpose, namely to form a perfect human being with noble character. This study uses a qualitative analysis method with a library research approach. This study aims to explore the principles of Islamic education according to Al-Ghazali and analyze their relevance to the current state of Islamic education. In conclusion, Al-Ghazali's thoughts on Islamic education have high relevance in addressing the moral and spiritual crisis that has plagued educational institutions, including madrasas. Strengthening ethical values and sincerity in the teaching and learning process is an urgent need amidst the crisis of student character. Therefore, reactualizing Al-Ghazali's educational concept is a strategic step in building a holistic, humanistic, and transformative Islamic education system. Thus, education is not only a means of transferring knowledge, but also the formation of individuals with pure souls, knowledge, and noble character in accordance with the vision of Islam rahmatan lil 'alamin.
